Nervous Patients

We understand that many patients fear the dentist and find difficulty in receiving the treatment that they require. Unfortunately avoiding treatment usually results in these patients requiring more treatment than others. This often results in an emergency situation due to such delays. This creates more anxiety due to repeated bad experience at each emergency dental visit and so no progress is usually made.

Is there anything that can help me with my fear of the dentist?
Yes. Some people are so frightened of the dentist that they miss out on dental treatment. They can overcome these fears with relaxation or sedation. Often nervous patients can cope without, especially if treatment is carried out in a sympathetic and gentle manner. Many patients try to build up their confidence by starting with very small amounts of simple treatment and gradually move on to more complex procedures once they have grown in confidence and start to trust their dentist. However many require sedation.

What is sedation?
We offer intravenous sedation to help such patients receive treatment. This is given in the back of your hand or arm. The dose will depend on the amount of treatment needed and the length of time it will take to complete. Please note: Another responsible adult must attend with you if you are to be sedated. A full assessment is required prior to sedation.

How will IV sedation in the surgery affect me?
You become drowsy and unaware of any treatment. Most people think they have been put to sleep and cannot remember anything.

You are still able to co-operate with the dentist. You won’t be able to drink alcohol, drive or work machinery that day and will need assistance home.
